CARNIVAL OF XANTHI 2011
'International Monetary Craze'

The theme for the carnival of Xanthi 2011 is 'International Monetary Craze' inspired by the economic crisis in Greece and the involvement of ‘IMF’. We were mainly inspired by 'Karagiozis' a Greek fictional shadow puppet from the 19th Century. We went back to the past and dragged out national folk phrases related to ‘Karagiozis’ that were full of wisdom, humour and prophetically describe the current situation.

WEDDING INVITATION

The idea was to invite the guests to the wedding with a present. We decided to create a wedding invitation presenting an artwork mounted on passepartout.

Nearchos Ntaskas created a line art drawing inspired by the ‘unity’. The drawing of each invitation was silkscreen printed, numbered and signed by the artist.

CHRISTMAS BAZAAR

In this project we were asked to design a brochure for a Christmas Bazaar at a nursery school. We designed the little penguins in this format so that they can all stand next to each other and form a cut-out toy for the kids.

FROM PIRAEUS TO ACROPOLIS

Due to the annual event, ‘Poseidonia’ in Greece, Alpha Bank wanted to invite the ship-owners to a special dinner night at the Acropolis museum. Our main idea for the event was to create a line artwork that describes the way ‘from Pireaus to Acropolis’. It displays the most obvious parts of this root. The minimalism of the line art was chosen in order to be discreet in the museum and at the same time it reveals a very artistic approach. The paper and the folds of the invitation refer to the columns of Parthenon. The whole idea was also applied in large scale at the museum's entrance to accompany the event.

CARNIVAL OF XANTHI
'In love at carnival'

Description: Our task was to design the visual communication of the carnival of Xanthi, a major cultural event of this Northern greek city. Our visual approach of this carnival involved a great research in the tradition and the folk art of the area. We dealt with this event as an authentic old time greek carnival, respecting its origins but at the same time we managed to reveal traditition through very modern use of illustrations. The figures illustrated, are inspired by the folk art carnival costumes as well as the traditional womens’ costumes of Xanthi. They also carry charasteristics of nature, of the ‘ritual madness’ and spiritual ecstasy of the Dionysian festivals. As the theme for this year was ‘in love at carnival’ we chose to combine red, black and white colour to make a strong and passionate visual statement.

GEFIRES ‘JAZZ’

This was a big jazz event at the Megaron Athens Concert Hall that consisted of three different shows. Each of the black figures relate to one of the events. The illustration shows three dominant black forms with strong characteristics. The use of orange bright colour in combination with the black forms creates an emphasis that makes the poster stand out.

YANNIS MARKOPOULOS
‘CONCERT DEDICATED TO IMMIGRATION & THE ENVIRONMENT’

Description: Concert composed and conducted by Yannis markopoulos (greek composer) at the Athens Concert Hall. The aim of the concert was to promote issues like immigration and environment. We have tried to combine these two strong issues with the use of an illustration that describes both the human nature and the environment being ‘abused’. We have deliberately kept the spacious effect of the white colour throughout the brochure and the poster so that the title and and the illustration can communicate the message directly.

THE BIG JAZZ NIGHT

Description: This was an event organised at the Megaron the Athens Concert Hall where various famous jazz artists for different places of the world would play all night long. We were asked to design various items for the event like promotional posters, banners, adverts etc.
The main theme of the poster (which was applied also at the rest of
the items) was a main illustration that 'describes' the different styles
of jazz. The particular illustration was asked from 'Vima' newspaper
to display it at the front cover for an issue that was mainly dedicated
to jazz music.

MUSIC LIBRARY OF GREECE 'LILIAN VOUDOURI'

Description: Brochure design for the 'Music Library of Greece'.
The library acts as a pool of information for music and arts.
The brochure helps inform the public about the library's facilities, programmes and services. The illustration at the cover carries the message 'books and music' at the same time. The same concept was adapted for the rest items of the event such as banners, posters, leaflets etc.

STARRY NIGHTS AT THE NINE MUSES ATRIUM
Fernando de Rojas: LA CELESTINA

Description: Brochure design for the famous tragical comedy 'Celestina'. The etchings displayed in the brochure are made by the well known artist Fransisco Goya. The combination of schoking pink colour and gold together with the traditional etchings create a very modern enviroment. However, the use of a rather 'conventional' typographic arrangement together with the modern colours end up to a classy design approach with a twist.

CHARLES DIEHL & TSIMISKI STR

Description: Leaflet design for the musical show 'Charles Diehl & Tsimiski St.', which is part of the series that we mentioned above. The same colour panel and typography is used here to create a consistency of the series. The illustration used in this leaflet describes the portraits of eight women, which is the main theme of the show.
